Artist Development
Building your brand, finding your sound, and positioning yourself — real advice, no fluff.
6 minute read
Apparition is your go-to resource for artist development tips. Whether you're just starting out or leveling up, ask me anything about building your brand, finding your sound, and positioning yourself in the industry. I give real advice based on real music business knowledge — no fluff.
Development is not a vibe. It is a sequence: who you are on record, who you are in a room, and how a stranger finds both. If those three stories do not match, the industry treats you as unfinished — and they are not wrong.
What to work on first
Sound before aesthetic. A visual brand on top of uncommitted songs is a costume. Finish a small body of work that sounds like one artist, then dress it.
A one-line position: hometown, lane, and what is different. If you cannot say it in one breath, neither can a publicist, a playlist editor, or Making Wavs.
Proof of life: a live clip, a session, a finished single with credits. Development without artifacts is a diary.
