Recoupment
How the company gets its money back before you see another dollar.
Recoupment is the ledger. Recording costs, advances, sometimes video, sometimes tour support, sometimes 'marketing' — all can sit on your account depending on the contract. You may be a gold-selling artist still unrecouped. Cross-collateralization means they recoup album one against album two. Independents: if you take a deal, ring-fence costs, forbid cross-collateralization where you can, and demand statements you can audit.
