BMI is ASCAP's chief competitor for US performance royalties. Writers join free; publishers have a fee. Same job: collect when the composition is performed. Nashville and a lot of songwriters default here; it is not magically better for country, and ASCAP is not magically better for pop. What matters is joining one, registering every work, keeping splits honest, and making sure the publisher share has a home.
