Publishing
The composition copyright and the money it earns.
Publishing is the song as writing: melody, lyrics, the work. It earns performance royalties (PROs), mechanicals (streams, sales, The MLC in the US), sync fees for the composition, and sometimes print. You can self-publish (register as writer and publisher at your PRO, use an admin like Songtrust) or sign a publishing deal that assigns the copyright for a term in exchange for an advance and creative work. Do not give away publishing to get a playlist. Do not confuse DistroKid with a publisher.
