Advanced Monetization Strategies

Sync, publishing, merch, and beat leasing — extra pipes, not a substitute for the work.

8 minute read

There's more than one way to collect on a record. Ask me about sync licensing, publishing royalties, merchandise, and beat leasing — and which of those actually fits where you are. Making Wavs is still the room: magazine, submissions, playlists, shows. The rest is infrastructure.

Streams are one pipe

Interactive streaming pays the master through your distributor and the composition through a PRO plus The MLC (US). That is table stakes, not a plan.

Publishing: register every work, collect the publisher share, use an admin if you are not chasing foreign societies yourself. Do not sell publishing for a playlist.

Sync: you need to control master and composition, have instrumentals, and a clean pitch. Libraries help; relationships still win.

Merch and direct-to-fan (Bandcamp, mailing list) are often the first honest money. Beat leasing is a real business if the contracts say what the buyer is buying.

Where you are matters. No catalog yet: finish and register. Catalog, no audience: sync + direct-to-fan. Audience: merch, live, and stop leaving neighboring rights unclaimed.
